Spice up your palate at a new Northern and Southern Indian restaurant, Malgudi ~ that will fire up your tastebuds in Petaling Jaya. Auntie Lilly recently had a savoury trip of appetising and authentic Indian dishes in Section 16, Petaling Jaya.   

Fine Indian Cuisine concocted by Malgudi's Indian Master Chef Anand who helmed the kitchen with his impressive 25 of culinary experience in preparing both Northern and Southern cuisine; are sure to excite the discerning taste buds of all who dine at Malgudi.

If you are wondering how does the restaurant got its name, the story goes like this .... Malgudi is a fictitious town created by R.K Narayan in his novels and short stories, it went on to capture the imagination of of the readers as a real town in South India. The caricature was created by his brother, R.K Laxman to fortify the memories in the mind of the readers.

Thus came about a group of restaurants all over the world capturing the minds and palettes of its guests alike and the restaurant owners are proud to say that now in the heart of Petaling Jaya, you can find Malgudi Restaurant, an establishment dedicated to serving imaginative and creative cuisine of the Southern Indian cuisine.

The restaurant occupies two floors of the shop lot with spacious seating on the upper floor. The ground floor has limited seatings as its houses the kitchen too. The restaurant, which does not serve alcohol, has a 100 person seating capacity, with both air-conditioned and al fresco dining ambience.

Dim illuminations exude a sense of calm with dusky-coloured floor tiles and glossy wooden features set to welcome patrons. Malgudi offers a quiet and comfortable dining setting with ample parking space, so diners need not stress over parking especially during the peak lunch hours. 

Love In Every Dish Served At Malgudi 

I was pretty amazed with the traditional or classic utensils used to served our dishes; starting with a set of stainless steel Indian plate called thali along with small bowls called katoris and handi for serving the food. A stainless steel glass for serving water for the diners too.

Nandu Rasam ~ Crab Rasam

We started the meal with crab soup called Nandu Rasam or Crab Rasam - a belly-warming crab leg soup liberally spiced with black peppercorns, cumin, coriander, mustard and fennel seeds and infused with tamarind. The Nandu Rasam, with its perfect balance of spicy and a hint of sourish served well as the appetiser.

Manager Bala went on to explained that this is their best seller, being the top favourite among the diners at Malgudi. They sold up to 400 bowls of this crustacean soup per month. He added that this rich tasting crab soup is a good home remedy for colds, very healthy and good enough to boost your immunity.

Nandu or Crab Rasam is very delicious in taste with strong flavour of the spices and crab juices within. My young son who is a 'non-crab person' gulped down the flavourful soup without a second thought. Guess it must have hit the right spot in his taste that night!

Shredded Onions Rings

My journey to Southern Indian cuisine, starting off my gastronomic route with these lovely platter of crunchy deep fried mixed vegetables of onions, cauliflower and bitter gourd.

Well Fried Bitter gourd 

The deep fried bitter gourd was surprisingly the favourite for this platter. My young son who usually don't eat any bitter gourd on his regular meals was seen to be nibbling away every single morsel, tiny bits that was left behind. 

It must have been the skill of the chef or the spices and special flour used that masked way the bitterness usually very prominent in these tiny size bitter gourd. Anyway, every one at the dinner table loves this to bits! 

Cauliflower

Next is Kanava 65 ~ Squid, this is one sinful dish you will crave for more. Attractive deep reddish orange fried squid rings coated with masala batter, fried to perfection with cuury leaves and served with fresh onions for the added taste. Another good choice if you're looking for some tasty pleasureable bites before hittings the mains! 

Chicken Lollypop

The Chicken Lollypop marinated  with southern spices and special masala surprisingly still remains its juiciness even after deep fried. Aromatic, fragrant and cooked well through, these bite-sized portions were easy to eat and the sauce complemented the savoury juices on the inside. This is addictive and finger-licking good too!

Fish Pepper Fry

For those who prefer fish to chicken, there is the Fish Pepper Fry, made with tender cubes of mackerel or tenggiri marinated in spices and cooked with spicy and savoury sauce with tomatoes and onions, garnished with chopped scallions.

 Paneer Butter Masala

The Paneer Butter Masala - cottage cheese cooked in a flavoursome masala spicy sauce - was a real treat for the tastebuds. Perfectly moreish biting into the soft paneer or cottage cheese cubes. A tasty vegetarian dish especially if you enjoy eating these succulent cubes of Indian Cottage Cheese.

Tandoori Platter

For those who are fans of grilled tandoori dishes, must try the Malgudi's Tandoori Platter. A mixed meat platter of Tangri kebab (chicken drumstick), Chicken Kebab, Fish Kebab and Prawn Kebab served with a creamy mint sauce, house made with chat masala, fresh mint and yoghurt. All are flamed-licked grilled in clay oven for an authentic flavour. 

My hubby, Uncle Hong loves the Tangri Kebab sighting that it was well-flavoured in mace and not dry, but still moist and juicy inside. Fish Tikka on the other hand, made with tender cubes of tenggiri marinated in yoghurt, fresh lime juice, coriander and spices.

I thought the grilled prawn were rather tiny, charred black and lacking springness but nevertheless we still finished them up. Would have been better if bigger size King Prawn or Tiger Prawn (51/60) are used instead for tandoori dishes.

 Plain Naan

Moving on, there are the Naans and Roti to check out. All are made fresh from oven and served warm to go with the masala, tandoori and curry dips. Pick from your favourite choices of roti and naans such as Garlic Naan, Butter Naan, Masala Kulcha, Tandoori Roti and plain naan.

My pick is of course the authentic flatbread - Tandoori Roti made from fresh Indian wheat flour used to make most Indian flatbreads, such as chapati, roti, naan and puri. I enjoyed the less-gluten, dense and flavour of the tandoori roti most of the time when dining out in Indian restaurants.  

 Masala Kulcha

Tandoori Masala Kulcha is another kind of Indian bread blended with spices and stuffed with potatoes, onions and carrots. A totally healthy offering of having naan bread with added vegetables, best eaten with mint sauce or taste good even on it own.

 Mutton Rogan Josh

By now, I guess most foodies would know about Mutton Rogan Josh; the most famous and delicious mutton curry recipe of Kashmir, a popular Northern Indian cuisine known all over the world. A treat to the taste buds, with flavours of spices blend well in Mutton Rogan Josh.

No briyani is complete without some succulent pieces of mutton wrapped in a perfect blend of aromatic spices and herbs! I love Malgudi's Mutton Rogan Josh for its rich, hearty and aromatic gravy, delectable delights when eaten with your white rice, naans or roti.

My daughter, Carmen who came to dine with me is a fan of the Aloo Gobi Masala. The flavourful Indian vegetarian dish came beautifully cooked with potatoes, cauliflower and many spices which makes it fragrant and mouth-watering. Try this dish and enjoy with your choice of rice, roti or naans. 

 Chicken Briyani

Last but not least, the taste of India would not be complete without their famous Briyani selections. We sampled their Chicken Briyani, comes served with chicken drumstick and an boiled egg. Truly delicious meal from the first to the last bite for this rice dish. Clearly evident in every spoon of the chicken briyani, made from the finest quality long grain basmati rice and succulent chicken meat.   

Currently there's a Lunch Promotion for RM 9.90 only inclusive of 1 complimentary soft drink.

We were filled to the brim after the briyani rice and skipped the desserts portion for this review session. Perhaps you can try the restaurant's Gulab Jamun and Rasagula, some of Malgudi's special sweet offering which is a great way to end your meal.

  4. Foods are looking really amazing in this photo. I wish I could taste all these mouth-watering Indian foods. Though the south Indian recipes are spicy, it feels great when recipes are prepared with trusted hand. Every place in India holds some of their signature cuisines and that attract a lot of people who are visiting from other places. Apart from these restaurants, there are some restaurants inside the luxury hotels that provide delicious cuisines with a great deal. Anyways, thanks for sharing your experience.
